There are several Beautiful cathedrals in France. The Strasbourg Cathedral also known as Notre Dame de Strasbourg is one of the most Striking Cathedrals in both France and Europe.
The Cathedral is located in the historic city of Strasbourg. The city is full of stunning architecture and meandering rivers. This Gothic cathedral is a must on any bucket list for people visiting the Alsace region.

Why visit Strasbourg Cathedral?
Strasbourg cathedral is leading catholic cathedral in France. It is also a leading example of Gothic architecture. It took my breath away the first time I saw it.
The cathedral was once the tallest building in the world. Today its the 6th tallest building in the world. Considering this building was mainly constructed during the middle ages this is quite impressive.
On a clear day Strasbourg cathedral can be seen from the Black Forest in Germany. Visitors are also treated to breathtaking views across the city from the cathedral.
There have been religious buildings on this site from around the 5th century. This includes a Basilica and a number of cathedrals. Construction on the current Strasbourg Cathedral started in 1176. It was built on top of the foundations of a 11th century wooden structure that had been destroyed by fire. Completed in 1439 the current building is in the style of Romanesque and Gothic.
Due to its location in a gorgeous square the building can be admired from all angles. You will be in awe no matter which direction you arrive from. The spire decorated with hundreds of sculptures is the cathedrals main attaction.
Due to the pink hue of the stones the cathedral looks beautiful no matter the time of day. However its even more stunning during the golden hour which is right before sunset.
During the evening in the summer months visitors are able to view a spectacular light show for free.
Best ways to Enjoy Strasbourg Cathedral?
One of the best if not the best way to enjoy Strasbourg cathedral is to walk around it and view it from all angles. No matter the direction you come from the moment you turn the corner and see it you will be taken in by this overwhelmingly beautiful building. It totally took my breath away the first time I saw it. I did return to the square more than once and every time I had the same reaction.
Strasbourg cathedral is also located in a Pedestrian only square and is surrounded by cafes, restaurants, shops and medieval buildings. Walking around the outside of the building is one of the best ways to experience it for the first time and really see its beauty and charm.
Once you have admired the outside its now time to enjoy the inside of this stunning building
Inside the cathedral
If you walk up the Rue Merciere the entrance is directly in front of you and its free to enter the cathedral. Walking through the grand front doors you can enjoy the long nave and see the truly beautiful stained glass windows which are original including the stunning rose window.
Other feature that you should not miss are the giant organ, the pulpit and the Renaissance clock. There are free walking tours that give you the opportunity to find out more about the cathedrals
Opening times for the cathedral are Monday to Saturday: 8:30 to 11:15 a.m. and 12:45 to 5:45 p.m. Sundays and feast days: 2 to 5:15 p.m. The cathedral may be closed to visitors during services.

The viewing Platform
Another great way that many people enjoy Strasbourg Cathedral is to climb the 329 stairs to the viewing platform which sits in front of its spire.
From here you can enjoy stunning views over the historic centre of Strasbourg known as La Petite France.
After taking in stunning views you then have the opportunity to walk through and directly under the spire allowing visitors to admire its constructions from the inside.
The cost to enter the Cathedral platform is 8 Euros per adult 5 euros for children under 5 free and special deals for groups and disabled. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance
April to September: daily from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 1:30 to 8 p.m. October to March: daily from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 1:30 to 6 p.m. Last climb 45 min before closing. Closed on 01/01, 01/05, 25/12. Access may be temporarily suspended due to overcrowding or bad weather.
Astronomical clock
Another fantastic feature of the Strasbourg Cathedral is its Astronomical clock. Everday except Sundays and public holidays at 12.30 visitors have the opportunity to see the clock in action. Its costs 4 euros adults 2 euros for children there are also special offers for groups.. Booking is advised although you can get tickets at the door just before it starts. There is a short video before the show in which involves the Apostles marching in front of Jesus. The clock has unique mechanism and the current one dates back to 1842.
The light Show
The final way to enjoy the beauty of Strasbourg cathedral is to witness a summer light show. Ive not personally seen this but I have heard from others that it’s a spectacular show that uses music and lights to show of the cathedrals spectacular architecture.
